Counseling is not about giving you the answers—it is about helping you understand yourself deeply enough to discover the answers that are truly your own.
Counseling offers a space to pause, explore, and understand what may be hard to see when we are caught up in our own experiences.
Through meaningful conversation, reflection, and evidence-informed approaches, counseling can help you recognize patterns behind your emotions, thoughts, relationships, and choices; navigate experiences such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, identity, disability, relationships, and major life transitions; and discover new ways of responding to life’s challenges.
The purpose is not to remove every difficulty or provide ready-made answers, but to help you develop greater self-awareness, emotional resilience, clarity, and the ability to make choices that reflect who you are and the life you want to create.
Effective counseling is grounded in professional knowledge and experience, but its foundation is a deep respect for human nature—for each person’s individuality, dignity, choices, and unique way of understanding and experiencing life.
Shawn’s counseling and life coaching approach primarily integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). CBT helps identify and examine patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior that shape how we experience difficulties, while ACT encourages greater psychological flexibility—learning to make room for difficult thoughts and emotions without letting them determine the direction of our lives.
Rather than focusing only on eliminating symptoms or changing “negative thoughts,” Shawn combines these approaches to help clients understand how the mind works, change what can be changed, accept what cannot be controlled, clarify what truly matters, and take meaningful action consistent with their values. This integrative approach is further informed by mindfulness, philosophy, and a deep respect for each person’s individual experience, autonomy, and humanity.
